Time Management

Time is our only commodity that is given freely, can be spent as you wish however once spent you can never get it back! So why is it that some people can achieve and accomplish more in one day than others can in a whole week? They prioritise!

Here are a few great tips from a Profitune we thought were worth noting:

1. Know where your goals are

Remember back at school when playing team sports and there was always at least one kid in the team who forgot which side they were playing for and kicked a goal for the opposite team? (Perhaps you were that kid?!) Knowing exactly where your goals are ensures you are heading in the right direction.

For a goal to be digestible to your brain it needs to be:

• Precise – My sales target is $1,000,000
• Have a Deadline – 30th July 2011
• Positive - Before 30 July 2011 we will have sales of more than $1,000,000.
(Not “I don’t want to go broke”. Wishing on a star and building a rocket to get there are two totally different things!)
• Personal – Set your tasks each day to align to your goal. All tasks associated with your goal are high priority and everything else is not.

2. Planning Planning Planning

We’ve all heard the saying “Don’t bite off more than you can chew” and “You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time”, the metaphors are perfect for planning how you’re going to achieve your goals and get some time back.

• Breakdown the steps needed to reach your goal into small achievable pieces in the order you think they’ll need to be completed
• Assign deadlines to each part of your plan
• Leave space around your plan for the urgent things that happen.

3. Commitment

“In a bacon and egg breakfast, the chicken has an interest, but the pig is definitely committed”.

In order to help you keep to your goals you should:
• Be accountable – tell people about your goals or find a mentor
• Reward yourself – small rewards keep your incentive to keep achieving your goals high
• Reprogram your brain - write out your goals and read them often

Stick to the plan and you’ll find you’ll be achieving great things in no time at all and have enough of it left over to enjoy the rest of your life!
