Power of Positive Words
Our choice of words directly determines what path we will travel and what we achieve, both personal and professional. Words have the power to build up or to tear down.
Nan Russell gave some excellent examples in her article "Words Words Words" which show that small changes to our words will create a huge difference to our end results.
- Spend and Invest: Would you like the bank to spend or invest your money? It’s a little irritating if the bank ‘spends’ your money, spending implies that you’re never going to see that money again. The word invest however evokes a different response, suddenly there is emotion and expectation and hope that the investment will bring a positive return.
- Problem and Challenge: At some point, we all get it wrong. Problems can be fixed - challenges are met. Challenges represent the opportunity to overcome and improve morale. On the other hand, no-one really wants to be seen as a ‘problem’.
- Bodies and People: A ‘butts on seats’ mentality decreases morale, it sends the message to your employees that they’re unimportant, and their goals and ambitions are worthless. The word people however; recognises the individual and gives respect. It’s a word that will add value.
Influencing others doesn’t have to be dramatic; it is the consistent little things that make a big difference, because the little things add up. The words we use to talk about the things in our world will shape the way we think and the way people around us think. If we criticize and complain we condemn the world around us, you can sure bet the results will reflect that. If we think of our employees as problems, they probably will be!
We’ve all heard the saying that ‘Your attitude will determine your altitude’, the words we choose will enable us to inspire, empower and ultimately create results. They have the power to impact and bring about change. So what world are you creating?
